I recently purchased Omega 3 oil for Wesley as I’m interested in some of the particular health benefits that it offers. If you’ve ever tried giving fish oil to kids you’ll know how challenging it is…I hadn’t so it was all new to me! I was excited when the gel capsules came in all the way from New Zealand & wanted to give one to Wesley right away. This is where the tricky part began.
So far what I’ve tried doing is blending frozen berries & frozen bananas with either yogurt, soy milk, milk, or a combination of these to make a shake, and in a cup taking a little sugar (though I want to try honey) and squeezing the oil onto the sugar, mixing it around, then adding the shake to that paste. I’m sure you could mix it all together in the blender but I was worried I’d lose some of the precious oil. : )
I also tried pouring some oil over his mac & cheese, but he didn’t seem to care for that. I tried hiding a capsule in peanut butter but he noticed it & spat it out. I still might try this one again, just without the capsule. Duh!
I make a lot of berry shakes for the boys and freeze the shakes in little cups with spoons so they can each have their own popsicle, which they love. I even added walnuts since they don’t like those on their own but got carried away & added too many. They ate the popsicles, although they seemed to notice they weren’t as yummy…so I think I could add less in the future without them noticing and it’s a way to get more Omega 3 in their diet.
For anyone who’s interested, here’s the website where I got the Omega 3 oil from:

I haven’t had it long enough to officially “recommend” it, but I’ll let you know in the next month or two how we like it.
If you have any tips on how to give fish oil to kids I’d love to hear them!
So cute! Great ideas, Linda! Miss you!
Miss you too! Would love to hear more from your corner of the world…maybe a blog or something, hint hint.
Have you tried the Almond (specifically Vanilla) milk yet? My kids will drink anything if the shakes are made with Almond milk.
No I haven’t, that might be perfect though ’cause Preston can’t drink cow’s milk or soy milk. It was the same with Wesley until he was he was closer to 3.
That’s why Connor drinks it too. I think he’s out grown the allergy but we still prefer it. Hope you guys enjoy it, you can also find recipes on the Internet for homemade almond milk – it’s very easy.
Oh cool! I’m gonna try to make my own almond milk…I never would of thought of that. Thanks Clare!
Was there a particular reason you were giving it to Wesley? I’m interested in why and of course how it goes with it. I tried giving it to all my kids.. all the kids took to the little fish gummys, except one of the kids.
Well Wesley had a bit of a speech delay, though he was very communicative in other ways. He’s talking a lot now, pretty much saying everything (he’ll be 4 in Feb.), but his speech still isn’t as clear as most kids his age or younger. I had come across different testimonials online about speech improvement and omega 3, plus improvement in other areas such as being more calm. They say it’s great for kids with ADD/ADHD & there was other testimonials for lots of things. If you just do a web search for “speech & Omega 3″ or Omega 3 & ADD”, etc., you’ll see what I mean.
Now I don’t have enough experience with it to make any claims, it’s still new to me so I guess you’ll see what you think after doing some research. From what I’ve read, you really want to ensure that you’re getting quality Omega 3 & that it has DHA in it I believe or a good balance of the right supplements. I got mine from Xtend-Life which seems quite good. Right now the biggest challenge I’m having is finding ways to give it to Wesley. Since the capsule is too large for him to swallow I squeeze it on to different foods but it is strong tasting so he’ll notice if I use too much. It seems like squeezing half of the capsule on something & then the other half later on in the day works better than trying to pour all of it on one dish.
Let me know if you have any creative ways to give supplements to kids. Good luck Jessica!
