I recently purchased Omega 3 oil for Wesley as I’m interested in some of the particular health benefits that it offers. If you’ve ever tried giving fish oil to kids you’ll know how challenging it is…I hadn’t so it was all new to me! I was excited when the gel capsules came in all the way from New Zealand & wanted to give one to Wesley right away. This is where the tricky part began.
So far what I’ve tried doing is blending frozen berries & frozen bananas with either yogurt, soy milk, milk, or a combination of these to make a shake, and in a cup taking a little sugar (though I want to try honey) and squeezing the oil onto the sugar, mixing it around, then adding the shake to that paste. I’m sure you could mix it all together in the blender but I was worried I’d lose some of the precious oil. : )
I also tried pouring some oil over his mac & cheese, but he didn’t seem to care for that. I tried hiding a capsule in peanut butter but he noticed it & spat it out. I still might try this one again, just without the capsule. Duh!
I make a lot of berry shakes for the boys and freeze the shakes in little cups with spoons so they can each have their own popsicle, which they love. I even added walnuts since they don’t like those on their own but got carried away & added too many. They ate the popsicles, although they seemed to notice they weren’t as yummy…so I think I could add less in the future without them noticing and it’s a way to get more Omega 3 in their diet.
For anyone who’s interested, here’s the website where I got the Omega 3 oil from:
I haven’t had it long enough to officially “recommend” it, but I’ll let you know in the next month or two how we like it.
If you have any tips on how to give fish oil to kids I’d love to hear them!
