To A Symphony

Have you ever been washing dishes, wiping counters, showering, or some other mindless activity while dozens of thoughts are skipping around your head?

For me sometimes the feelings and emotions swirling around are all jumbled together, yet other times there’s this near-perfect sense of order and clarity to issues in a beautifully simple way. Unfortunately by the time I’m finished with whatever I’m working on most of the harmonious ideas have fallen by way of the drain.

But don’t you wish you could just reach out and capture the right words or perspective, or yes, even a tune before its gone?

And if you did maybe nothing would come of it or maybe it’d be part of a melody.

Next time why not try to catch that possible treasure-of-a-piece floating by – it may even lead to a symphony.

just maybe.
and how grand that would be.

p.s. What’s your all time favorite classical piece? I love the one that’s playing.

Baby Books & Shameful Time Lapses

For some reason I’ve had a hard time being consistent in keeping up with my kid’s baby books, even though I love the concept of baby and keepsake books. Some of my friends are really good about keeping track of everything and writing it down in beautiful neat handwriting. I don’t have beautiful handwriting so that’s one obstacle.

In years to come if you were to flip through the pages I’m afraid my poor child’s book is going to look something like this:

January 2007 – Wesley can hold his head up & coo!

March 2020 – Wesley is becoming an amazing soccer player. I’m so proud of him.

November 2032 – I can’t believe Wesley is getting married, it seems like just yesterday that I was writing about his love of soccer. Sigh. (Try 12 years lady!)

Okay, so my keepsake books don’t have time lapses the size of the Grand Canyon, but I’m not exactly proud of them either.

A simple solution that popped into my head one day is to keep a document on my laptop and type my thoughts about the kids in there.

Now I know having something you’ve personally written out by hand is more, well personal, but what I’m thinking is that waaay down the road I can either handwrite everything out. Gulp. Or print the pages out on nice decorative paper and make each kid their own booklet or something like that, maybe with their picture on the front cover or with pictures throughout the booklet, I don’t know.

Or if nothing else they’ll get an e-mail from me with an attached “doc”.

For now I feel it’s more doable since I’m already in the habit of using my laptop and if I can add to the document every few months or so I’ll be happy.

Of course I’ll also keep the baby books I have, in spite of their wretched lacks, but those only go up to 5 years anyways.

You can print yourself a copy while you’re at it, plus you’d be able to add a personal touch in plenty of ways, such as with beautiful handwriting.

I’ll stick to stickers, stamps, photos and such.

How have you managed to record memories of your children? Got any tips?

Hello New Year

IMG_0845.JPG

There’s been a whirlwind of work (mainly for my husband), busy fun and celebrations this holiday season and I’m almost partied out or tired in a good kind of way at least.

I might be posting less often in the coming months as I’ve been feeling the need to focus on some other things, I’ll see how it goes, but I should post pictures and pop in every now and then.

I put up a bunch of pictures from the holidays in our gallery.

A Happy New Year to you!

Celebrating Christmas

IMG_6079.jpg

I feel the sun warm on my back, a strong breeze brings music of wind chimes to me, dogs bark and children play. This new day is at my feet, these kids and this house are messy from paint splattering in Christmas crafting, and I need to get out of the pajamas I’m tempted to stay in and get on with this day.

It’s so easy to want everything to be perfect for Christmas, but thinking about the very first Christmas and how imperfect the setting was helps me remember that your surroundings and circumstances should never affect your celebration of Christ’s birth.

So I welcome Christmas in all our messy, unpreparedness, and somehow it doesn’t matter and is rather fitting actually.

May our hearts and imperfect surroundings be close to that first Christmas long ago; joyfully celebrating Christ’s arrival regardless of who or where we are.

A messy but-merry-just-the-same Christmas to you and yours!
